After the weekend’s games Wellington Olympic and
Miramar Rangers continue Wellington’s hold at the top of the club
Rankings. The Greeks kept their
100% record intact and have edged further ahead of their great rivals courtesy
of a 3-2 win over Western Suburbs, while Miramar were held 1-1 at home by
Wairarapa Utd. The CPL is already
looking like a two-horse race.
There are no really big clashes in the CPL this coming week, but look
out for the Miramar Rangers-Wairarapa Utd repeat in the Chatham Cup – this time
there has to be a winner.
Up into third place in the Rankings is Roslyn Wakari
following an impressive 2-1 victory over Caversham AFC; incidentally this was
Caversham’s first league defeat since July 2011. Unlike the CPL the FSPL is a real log-jam at the top of the
table with just three points separating the top five teams. The fixture to watch this week is Otago
University vs Caversham AFC.
And moving into fourth place in the Rankings is
Christchurch’s Western after a 4-0 defeat of Nomads Utd. Western has benefited from Rankings
points earned in Chatham Cup and English Cup games; they currently only sit
fourth in the MPL. Western face
Ferrymead Bays in the Chatham Cup on Queen’s Birthday Monday in another key Rankings
match up. And in fifth spot (up seven places) in the Rankings are MPL leaders
Nelson Suburbs. Although it was no
real shock the top of the table clash against Ferrymead Bays went Nelson’s way -
the magnitude of their victory, 4-nil, certainly caught the eye. Another huge league game for Nelson
comes this week, at home to Cashmere Technical who sit in second place in the
MPL.
There are no NRPL teams in the Rankings top five
although East Coast Bays and Birkenhead Utd sit in sixth and seventh, respectively. The Bays were held 1-1 by lowly
Waitakere City, whereas Birkenhead Utd suffered their first league defeat of
the season 4-5 to Central Utd. Approaching
the half-way mark the NRPL is still wide open, with any one of five teams
looking likely champions.
The big Rankings movers this week are Napier City
Rovers (up six) and Petone (down seven), but look for more big movements this
weekend after many sides double up league games with Round Two Chatham Cup fixtures. The Rankings will be updated next on
June 4th.
