New Zealand Club Football Team Rankings - 27 May 2013

After the weekend’s games Wellington Olympic and Miramar Rangers continue Wellington’s hold at the top of the club Rankings.  The Greeks kept their 100% record intact and have edged further ahead of their great rivals courtesy of a 3-2 win over Western Suburbs, while Miramar were held 1-1 at home by Wairarapa Utd.  The CPL is already looking like a two-horse race.  There are no really big clashes in the CPL this coming week, but look out for the Miramar Rangers-Wairarapa Utd repeat in the Chatham Cup – this time there has to be a winner.

Up into third place in the Rankings is Roslyn Wakari following an impressive 2-1 victory over Caversham AFC; incidentally this was Caversham’s first league defeat since July 2011.  Unlike the CPL the FSPL is a real log-jam at the top of the table with just three points separating the top five teams.  The fixture to watch this week is Otago University vs Caversham AFC.

And moving into fourth place in the Rankings is Christchurch’s Western after a 4-0 defeat of Nomads Utd.  Western has benefited from Rankings points earned in Chatham Cup and English Cup games; they currently only sit fourth in the MPL.  Western face Ferrymead Bays in the Chatham Cup on Queen’s Birthday Monday in another key Rankings match up. And in fifth spot (up seven places) in the Rankings are MPL leaders Nelson Suburbs.  Although it was no real shock the top of the table clash against Ferrymead Bays went Nelson’s way - the magnitude of their victory, 4-nil, certainly caught the eye.  Another huge league game for Nelson comes this week, at home to Cashmere Technical who sit in second place in the MPL.

There are no NRPL teams in the Rankings top five although East Coast Bays and Birkenhead Utd sit in sixth and seventh, respectively.  The Bays were held 1-1 by lowly Waitakere City, whereas Birkenhead Utd suffered their first league defeat of the season 4-5 to Central Utd.  Approaching the half-way mark the NRPL is still wide open, with any one of five teams looking likely champions.

The big Rankings movers this week are Napier City Rovers (up six) and Petone (down seven), but look for more big movements this weekend after many sides double up league games with Round Two Chatham Cup fixtures.  The Rankings will be updated next on June 4th.

New Zealand Club Football Team Rankings - 20 May 2013

CPL teams sit in the top two Rankings spots after last weekend’s fixtures.  Wellington Olympic scored a good away win over Lower Hutt City and hold onto the #1 spot, and Miramar Rangers put five past Western Suburbs to climb one place to #2.  Both sides are unbeaten this season, but Olympic sit atop the CPL by virtue of their 100% league record.  Also unbeaten are NRPL leaders Birkenhead Utd, but they fall two spots to #4 after an away draw against Hamilton Wanderers.  Likewise the unbeaten league leaders of the FSPL, Green Island, were held 2-2 by Roslyn Wakari - both Dunedin sides sit comfortably inside the Rankings Top 10.  Finally in the MPL, league leaders Ferrymead Bays climb to #3 in the Rankings following a sound away win aver FC Twenty11.

The big movers this week are Dunedin Technical (up seven) and Western Suburbs (down seven).

Key rankings games to look out for this coming weekend are Wellington Olympic and Western Suburbs in the CPL, the top of the table MPL clash between Ferrymead Bays and Nelson Suburbs, and Caversham AFC vs Roslyn Wakari in the FSPL.
