New Zealand Club Football Team Rankings - 24 June 2013

While it was the Chatham Cup games that grabbed the headlines over the weekend, there was also plenty of league action around the country.  In the end it all added up to some minor shuffling at the top of the pack, and few major movers in the Rankings.

First things first, NRPL league leaders Birkenhead Utd came though their cup tie with an extra time win over NR Division 1 leaders Glenfield Rovers; in spite of the win Birkenhead Utd drop one place.  Things were more clear-cut in Waitakere City’s 3-1 away win over Ellerslie AFC; City rise three places in the Rankings on the back of that win, but the question on everyone’s lips is can they stave off relegation?  Finally in the south, Caversham AFC with three late goals eventually ran out 4-0 winners over Dunedin Technical, ‘The Train’ climb one place to #4, whereas Tech (with the mostly aptly named coach in NZ football right now – Mike Fridge) tumble seven spots to #13.

There was a full complement of league games in the CPL, where Wellington Olympic (falling one spot to #3) and Miramar Rangers (climbing one to #6) continue to dominate.  Western Suburbs are a big mover from the CPL - up five places to #16 by virtue of a fine 4-1 away win over Upper Hutt City.  In the MPL the title race remains very tight - Ferrymead Bays (up one to #7) bounced back from a couple of bad weeks with a tight over Western (who fall three to #14), and Cashmere Technical were too good for Coastal Sprit and climb one place to #2.

As stated last week, Roslyn Wakari remain that top the Rankings this week because of their massive points total – they are the only team to break the 1180 points barrier so far this season, but look forward to their massive clash with Caversham AFC as the pick of next weekend’s Chatham Cup games.  Elsewhere the outcome of Wellington Olympic’s game against Lower Hutt could also markedly impact the Rankings.

New Zealand Club Football Team Rankings - 17 June 2013

There’s little in the way of change in the Rankings this week after most sides took a break due to Chatham Cup action, although in some cases this turned out to be inaction with the wet weather wreaking havoc.

Still there was time for Cashmere Technical (rising 2 to #3) to defeat Ferrymead Bays (falling 4 to #8), and Bay Olympic (rising 3 to #16) to defeat East Coast Bays (falling 3 to #12), both for the second week running.  Joining them in the last 16 of the Cup are other top tier club teams Hamilton Wanderers, Manurewa AFC, Onehunga Sports, Wairarapa Utd, Wellington Olympic (although they came might close to going out – sneaking home on penalties), Lower Hutt City, and Roslyn Wakari.

And it’s Roslyn Wakari that top the Rankings for a second week running, and such is the Dunedin side’s tally they will remain in top spot next week regardless of results.

Expect less than a full complement of games next, with postponed Chatham Cup games likely being rescheduled.
