New Zealand Club Football Team Rankings - 29 April 2013

There’s no change at the very top of this week’s rankings (and no change at the very bottom either, but let’s keep this blog on the ‘bright side of life’) with Christchurch’s Ferrymead Bays in the #1 spot and Dunedin’s Green Island still snapping at their heels in #2.  The Bays have the advantage of having played more games than ‘The Onions’ but have been beaten once this season, whereas Green Island are one of only two of the Nation’s Tier-2 sides to boast a 100% record.  The other?  Wellington Olympic, who sit in the #3 spot courtesy of an incredible 9-2 away win this weekend – I don’t think I can recall a more unusual scoreline in Senior Football in recent years.

The big movers this week?  Miramar Rangers are up three into #4 although they do face a stern CPL test against Lower Hutt City next week.  And Hamilton Wanderers are up seven places into #12 - it was a last gasp win over Central Utd for the boys in blue on Sunday.  Wanderers face Ellerslie AFC next week and will fancy their chances of a win and pushing into the rankings top ten.  It doesn’t get any easier for Central Utd though with their home game against East Coast Bays being my pick of the round.

Heading in the opposite direction in the rankings are Upper Hutt City, down ten places to #27 and Dunedin Technical, down eight places to #16. The FSPL has a strange look about it, with Tech in fifth place and Caversham AFC ‘only’ in second.  Next weeks round sees those two giants clash, and with Green Island at home to Grants Braes ‘The Onions’ will fancy their chances to increase their lead over at least one of their big rivals as well as hold onto their #2 spot in the rankings, but I don’t fancy their chances of overtaking Ferrymead Bays just yet, this Saturday the Bays face the lowly Nomads at home in the MPL.

New Zealand Club Football Team Rankings - 21 April 2013

After the Round 3 games in the NRPL, CPL and FSPL, and Round 6 games in the MPL, the rankings are starting to take taking on a more settled look.

Things are tight in the NRPL – the three teams that sat atop the table prior to the weekend all lost and at this rate the league will be the closest in many years.  Birkenhead Utd is now the only unbeaten side in the league and is the highest NRPL ranked team, up 10 places to #4.  Other big movers in the rankings are Three Kings Utd, up eight places to #16.

In the CPL Wellington Olympic are the only side with a 100% record, and sit at #5 up seven places, after Miramar Rangers were held to a draw by Upper Hutt City.  Western Suburbs rise four places to #9 after a good home win against 2012 Chatham Cup finalists Lower Hutt City.

Ferrymead Bays continue to set the pace in the MPL, and they hold onto the #1 spot thanks to an away win over Western, who in turn fall 10 spots to #13.  The Bays have established a bit of a gap on the rest of the pack, but the battle for second is close with Cashmere Tech, Western, Nelson Suburbs and Halswell Utd all within two points of eachother.

Green Island with a derby-day win over Mosgiel and Caversham AFC with a big home win over Queenstown Rovers still have a 100% record in the FSPL, and they sit at #2 and #3 respectively.  Otago University and Dunedin Technical fought out a 2-2 draw, but both sides remain in this weeks top 10.
